Your first growth channels

Growth and metrics
Sales, content, partnerships and referrals: which channel to try first and how to judge the result.
You usually find your first ten or twenty customers personally, through conversations and connections. Then the question becomes: where will the hundredth and the thousandth customer come from? A growth channel is a repeatable route by which customers keep coming to you. At an early stage, rather than trying many channels at once, it is better to pick one or two and learn them deeply.

The main channels

  • Direct sales. Going to the customer, calling, holding meetings. For business customers, especially at first, this is often the most effective route. It is slow, but you learn from every conversation.
  • Content. Giving your customers useful information through a Telegram channel, Instagram, YouTube or articles. Results come slowly, but they accumulate over time.
  • Partnerships. Organisations that already work with your customers: distributors, industry associations, banks, software vendors. The right partner can introduce you to hundreds of customers at once.
  • Referrals. Happy customers tell others about you. You can encourage this with a discount or bonus for a referral.
  • Paid advertising. Ads on Telegram, Instagram and search engines. Results come fast, but if you do not know your unit economics, it eats money just as fast.

What is particular about Uzbekistan

In many fields Telegram is central: customers, suppliers and colleagues all talk there. Industry groups and channels can be both a source of information and a sales channel. But in groups like these, start with useful advice and answers, not adverts.
With business customers, trust and personal introductions play a big role. A recommendation from a respected person is often far more effective than a cold call. That is why good relationships with your first customers become the foundation for later sales.
Prepare content and ads in your customers' language. In many cases you will need separate materials in Uzbek and Russian. There can be differences between Tashkent and the regions too: the same message may land differently in different places.

How to test a channel

Make a simple plan for each test:
  • which channel, and which group of customers;
  • how much money and time it will take;
  • the success criterion, for example how much one customer should cost;
  • how long the test runs, usually two to four weeks.
Start with a small budget. Measure the result: how many people saw it, how many were interested, how many became customers and what one customer cost. Calculate CAC separately for each channel, because costs can differ hugely between them.
Put more resources into the channel that works and stop the one that does not. But do not give up too quickly: some channels, content especially, take time to pay off.

Do not push growth before retention

If customers leave after a month or two, spending more on growth channels will not fix things. First make sure the product keeps people. The next lesson is about exactly that.

Master one channel

Many successful companies got most of their growth from one main channel. You need to test several at the start, but once one begins to work, master it: refine the message, make the process repeatable and put someone in charge of it. Being excellent at one channel is often better than being average at five.

A simple sales process

You can measure direct sales as a channel too. Break the process into stages: a list of prospects, first contact, a meeting or demo, a trial period, payment. Record how many people are at each stage and what percentage moves on to the next. Then you can see where you lose the most customers: perhaps people get interested after the demo but stall during the trial because they cannot set the product up. Improving exactly that step raises sales fastest.

Try this

Pick the three channels that fit your customers best. Write the test plan above for each. Start one of them within the next two weeks and record the results in your spreadsheet.
