Your first meeting with a mentor

One mentor a week — someone who has built a company. How to spend the first hour, and what not to ask.

Your first meeting with a mentor

The programme has 28 practising mentors. Each has built a company. One hour a week is not much, so the hour has to be spent well.

Before the meeting

The message to the mentor should be three lines at most:

  • What we are building — one sentence
  • What we showed this week — with a number
  • One question — one whose answer would change what we do

A mentor does not think in your place. They show you the road they walked.

One to one: one question, one hour
One to one: one question, one hour

In the meeting

  • Show the number, not the opinion
  • Write the answer down — you, not the mentor
  • Ask "what should we not do?"
  • Expect praise

What not to ask

"Is our idea good?" — nobody answers that honestly. Instead: "If you were us, which customer would you go to first?"

After the meeting

The next day, one message: what we tried, what came of it. Then the next meeting continues the last one instead of starting from zero.
